Redundancy- Waste of time?

ditto. including a certain 'buttocks munching through drysuit moment'. 18W HID pressed against the mask and I couldnt see anything other than a dull glow in the fog.

In that case you need to clear your mask as its obviously full of water ;) Your mask should be full of air and anything pressed against the glass perfectly readable (assuming you can focus on something that close to your eyes)

I am a massive fan of MCCR but i wouldn't dive one without a HUD because I know hand set diciplin is a variable and the incident pit loves a variable

Personally, I would NEVER consider diving any rebreather without a HUD. I started out in the early days without a HUD and once I tried one the first time, I have never looked back.

Interesting.

I think many of us started without a HUD, today it is standard on almost everything. Perhaps this represents the minimum the modern CCR diver is willing to accept?

It makes me suspect the days of the handset are numbered, will devices like the Shearwater NERD totally replace wrist mounted computers and HUD's as we currently know them? Certainly the minimalism of a single unit appeals to me :-)

My current unit does not have a HUD, as I'm colour blind the Shearwater HUD I had was okay but could be confusing, perhaps why I've not missed it?!

Could it b that using a HUD actually makes us check the handset less so u lose the habit of constantly checking?become complacent and reliant on the HUD and it as become the primary not the secondary controller as I was taught. (Nerd being the exception)
I've dived units with and without, I'm in the camp where more electric controls equals more diver complacency, that said I do believe they are a good addition and a real aid in low viz and dives where there is a momentary high task load but shouldn't be an excuse for sloppy handset monitoring.

which would work fine if it werent for the fact that the HID had a shroud that extends beyond the test tube to protect it.

Seriously, i can almost sense people saying 'thats bollocks', but i can assure you that when you're wedged and struggling to exit you really can silt things out that badly. Any tosh about being able to see a HUD then is just that, unless the hud led's make contact with the mask glass..... or they're laser cannons ;)

ATB

Mark

If only I was joking.

I suppose I should look on the bright side, it keeps me practicing bailouts. The impressive thing about the Hammerhead is that no matter how many times the death rattle goes off wrongly again it's still as attention grabbing as the first time.

I had a hammer head or three and had the same issues. I was lauging in an ironic way :D

People asked why I had three and id say 1 in use 1 Spare for when it broke and one in transit to America for repair :D

I think I'd rather dive a Classic Inspiration than those CF abortions!

It is taking redundancy to the maximum to have an "in transit" spare ;-)

I could've bought a complete second hand Inspo for what I spent on my HH controller and I wish I had now. I've never come so close to quitting rebreathers than since I installed the thing.

It's doubly annoying as it's the first time I've ever had to agree with Mark about anything. That just adds insult to injury :D

Mark and Lizzardland, I would like to make a couple of clarifications about the HammerHead. Normally, I would probably refrain from jumping into these kind of "anti-whatever type of unit" discussions, but since as you are probably aware, our company SubGravity has recently (January 1, 2014) acquired worldwide manufacturing, distribution, marketing and training for the HammerHead CCR, I feel compelled to point out a few items of which people should be aware. My comments concern the actual HammerHead CCR and not 3rd party controllers such as the Hammerinspo head that is pictured, although many of the same points would apply. Just to be clear, we only manufacture, distribute and service the actual HammerHead CCR.

1. The handsets which are pictured above, are VERY old units which are hopefully no longer in use. I would not personally dive on them as there have been many many changes, improvements and upgrades which affect the functionality and reliability of the HammerHead controllers.

2. All HammerHeads CCRs manufactured from January 1, 2014 on, use exclusively the newly upgraded Extreme handsets which utilize the rechargeable 18650 batteries which thus far have virtually eliminated any reboots due to power fluctuations.

3. All HammerHead CCRs manufactured from January 1, 2014 on, do NOT utilize tapered pipe threads in the handsets, which has virtually eliminated cracked handsets due to over tightening or dropping.

4. All HammerHead CCRs manufactured from January 1, 2014 on, utilize a dual spring technology in the battery compartments to guard against battery bounce.

5. All HammerHead CCRs manufactured from January 1, 2014 on, utilize a battery compartment which is flood resistant and sealed from the main electronics compartment.

6. All HammerHead CCRs manufactured from January 1, 2014 on, utilize a triple quality control procedure during the manufacturing and installation process of the electronics. Juergensen Marine goes through their QC process when they manufacture the circuit boards prior to shipping them to us. SubGravity immediately QCs the same circuit boards upon arrival at our facility and confirms that they pass our stringent QC requirements. After finally assembly of the handsets, they again go through a stringent QC process prior to shipping to customers. I am confident that you will not find a more thorough QC process in the industry. It is still very early days, but we have had excellent results from our QC process.

7. HammerHead CCR and SubGravity have a top notch service center which exclusively services that HammerHead CCR. We have a full inventory of all service parts and can turn around any service issues in very short order. Our service technicians are highly trained experts who not only build and service the units but also dive the units! (Imagine that, people that trust their own life to the unit they are manufacturing and servicing!)

8. We are just in the process of building out our website, www.hammerheadccr.com. Check back over the next couple of weeks to hopefully find a fully functional and in-depth website with on-line tools that help you place orders and hopefully avoid communication problems with the factory and service center.

9. We stand behind our products and give you the best warranty work in the industry. I personally promise you that you will be taken well care of. All units, regardless of brand, require service and maintenance. We are set up to ensure that the HammerHead CCR will give you years of faithful service with a minimum of downtime. The unit is designed to be the ultimate expedition grade rebreather. It is built like a tank and when someone does manage to break it, we are there to resolve any service issue quickly and efficiently.

10. There are obviously a lot of great CCR units being manufactured out there. We feel as though we have something unique and worth taking a serious look at. I think you will be interested to watch the innovation and continual improvements made on the HammerHead going forward. More than anything else, SubGravity stands behind it's product.

11. Mark and Lizardland, I can't help you with the museum pieces that you have pictured above, but if and when you decide to purchase a new HammerHead CCR, I will stand behind it and ensure your complete satisfaction or refund your money!

Randy, my "museum piece" is about four years old. Because Mark's unit is older does that excuse that at the time it didn't work? A bit of straw man tactic if you ask me.

But it's good to see that the manufacturers and resellers have finally acknowledged there were problems with the previous iterations. Makes a change from being told by "experts" that the faults were user errors.

I'm glad you have faith in your products but I'd rather quit diving than buy another HH product. Which is a shame as it has good ideas but poor execution.

Oh how I laugh every dive that I thought the extra £500 for a Deep Pursuit controller wasnt worth it.

I understand your frustration. As I said, we can only speak for the HammerHead CCR. We have taken steps to correct previous concerns and stand fully behind our product. We sincerely look forward to input from our users to help us to continue to innovate and most importantly to deliver top-notch customer service so that we don't end up with an end user that is anything less than 100% satisfied. As you said the HH has "good ideas". We are confident that the units that we are selling are some of the best design and execution in the marketplace. If anyone has an experience that is otherwise, my personal mobile number is +1 801-231-9891. I would like to speak with them directly.

Warm regards,
Randy

I used to have one of those museum pieces, the aluminium ones with Inspo head, worked fine but aluminium gave me problems, then I bought a HH extreme with new expedition units and , couldn't be more satisfied....

I thought I'd never see another HH slagging session on CCRx. I have to have respect for Randy for not moderating your unkind comments and trying to explain what he is doing to try to rectify past mistakes.

However I can't help but think this is half hearted amateur HH knocking, what is really needed is the Don and Dave show to bring some real vitriol and venom to the party.

Don is secretly test diving our latest creations and will soon report! Did I mention that he is a silent investor in our company? :)

Agreed, it is good that someone is finally taking HH by the balls and acknowledging there were issues after years of customers being fobbed off and shoulder shrugging.

But maybe I'm not reading it right. I got the impression that Randy's offer is only supporting problems in current, complete HH units and not rectifying problems in past units or controller only units? I'm guessing owners of past units with problems are stuck with sorting them at their own expense?

Anyway, springtime is coming, trees are blossoming, the geese are flying north, the water is getting warmer and an old HH will only reboot one dive in three instead of every one in winter...

ROFLMAO,
that's a good one Randy!

On a more serious note, as a prior owner of an Optima with both rev c and d handsets, I'm glad to here of the improvements you and Kevin are making. I was skeptical at first about the 18650 battery solving the reset issues. I had felt a higher voltage rather than more current would be a better solution. However in the end I'm glad the issue has been addressed with good results.
