Redundancy- Waste of time?

Yes, although it could be argued the JJ head has some common elements

sensors, solenoid, controller and HUD seem to be the same. batteries are possibly different. The JJ appears to be essentially a deep pursuit with some DT lungs and an inspo inspired scrubber placed in a stupid aluminium can with a SS stand. Aluminium, stainless and seawater, what could possibly go wrong? I prefer the plastic can on my DP / inspo scrubber / DT lungs non CE version.

Agree with the fischer vs hardwired argument. Having had a fischer cabled predator on my classic I'd go hardwired every time. fischer connectors are instrumentation connectors not proper subsea connectors. proper connectors as used in the commercial subsea industry cost a fortune and are still a weak point.

Have you looked at Colkan's controllers? They did a digital version of the Mk15 analogue pod. Very simple, holds a constant SP. No bloat, no other crap on it, just a SP controller and simple light display driver.

Are they still a going concern?

Agreed, although the Ali tube is a nice design IMO it wouldn't be my choice, the rest of the unit is superb.

Yes, I basically have an MCCR of that... now try and book on a Red Sea Trimix trip or get full coverage insurance... You have a superior unit but you'll be shunned.

I totaly agree in so far as the JJ should be MUCH cheeper than it is but I disagree in so far as the unit design is a masterpiece of simplicity and it is beautifully balanced to dive.

Inspos are fine but only in a G box IMHO The big yellow one has too many drawbacks

don't get me wrong the yellow box is a shit design and was replaced with an MH alibox and then an all aluminium 'ali box' that stands up. but I like the plastic scrubber can.

it's the design of sealing the head against an aluminium sealing face in the JJ aluminium can that strikes me as daft. I'd have made it with a replaceable plastic liner so that loop integrity is not compromised by corrosion of the alumium.

I agree about Fischer, utter sh*te.

I totally understand the DiveCAN system but why plug able? There is no s*dding point at all that I can see...

If you went into Hospital would you choose the bed with the monitors plugged in or where they are wired into a fused spur? :-)
Safety over Convenience every time please

LOL - first of all, love the "s*dding" bit. Coming from the States, that term has no strong meaning, whereas in the UK it's right up there with "b*gger"... (and again...)

Of course your point is very valid - the only counter is that I am also a fan of the "fusable link" concept. I would rather have the wrist-to-rebreather-head line separate in a controlled manner with no damage to the system, than have it separate in a manner of its own choosing. And there's the convenience factor of being able to detach for various reasons (transport, repair, ...) that's not a huge point, but it does end up on the plus column for me.

never had anyone knock me back from a boat / trip for diving a non CE unit yet. I'll be mightily pissed off and up for a row if I get to Bikini and someone tells me my unit is non CE and I can't dive it 10,000 miles from the EU.

As for insurance my dive insurance doesn't specify I have to use CE marked equipment and I don't carry life cover as my mortgage is repaid and my lad is 19 and technically a grown up. If I die he can join the army if he's hungry.

Just speaking personally, for my desires, mindset, and style of diving, a perfect world setup would be the Aurora Blue with NERD running off the second set of three cells. (and this is hypothetical of course, as the AB is not available yet).

Ben, I'm sure you already know this, but the new Shearwater DiveCAN HUD has a colorblind mode (I'm colorblind too).

Analog signals and the marine env don't make good bedfellows, so DiveCAN or the like is very high on my list.

Mikes done some great work but its far from a simple unit!

Thats why i have 2 units one CE that i know wont get refused and one deep sunday diver

I'm sure you are right, but in practice that design feature is one of the simplifying things that I really like

I have not heard of the problem you describe actually happening. But I only had mine 3.5 years, and I wasn't paying attention to other peoples JJ problems before then (my previous unit make was renowned for having a litany of reliability problems), so there is still time.

Never seen a deep pursuit head, I am too young. Do you have any pictures ?

The new JJs (and the one like my one with the upgrades) dont seem to suffer but if you look at my MK1 can the corosion on the base and on the back plate mounts is prety grim.

The deep persuit had something of the old Hammer Head design about it with a big dolop of JJ thrown in. It was a thing of beauty and I have never heard a bad word said about it. I think it was the JJ and the cost of CE that put it to bed.
