URSUIT HEAVY LIGHT KEVLAR BDS
I have just received my shiny new drysuit and in keeping with the rebreather overview pages, I decided to also do ancillary equipment and what better to start with than a drysuit?
Ursuit is a Finnish company that has been striving to produce the highest quality immersion suits for Sailing and Diving since 1964. Stating that comfort and reliability must reign above all else, they make a serious line of drysuits for the demanding technical diver.

ursuit kevlar bds.jpg

The name may sound contradictory, the suit is designed as a heavy duty suit but being as light as possible (my size M comes in at just over 2Kgs) and with 20% Kevlar reinforcement and ample heat pressed wear pads, it looks and feels tough.
ursuit front.jpg
But what does BDS mean? It stands for Breathable Design Suit. In short the material can breathe allowing you to keep your cool before the dive, which I was a little sceptical at first until I tried it and it actually does keep you cool before entering the water.

Ursuit unzip.jpg
The suit feels quite thin and flexible, making donning and doffing very easy and quite efficient. URSUIT have included a lot of nice features in the suit. I will go over the major features below.

ursuit shoulder.jpg
Ample heat pressed wear pads- any where you can think of that might wear, this includes the shoulders, knees, elbows and crotch. They are oversized and fit with the lines of the suit quite seamlessly.

Ursuit p valve.jpg
The Telescopic waist allows for easy moving whilst wearing the suit, making up for the lack of stretch in the material. The crotch strap has a Y shape in the back that takes out the uncomfortable ***8220;wedgy***8221; feeling. As you can see in the above picture, the wear pads are large and well fitted. The low profile Relieve valve as an accessory that I think is almost a necessity.

ursuit sleeve.jpg ursuit front.jpg

One of my favourite features of this suit is how the wrist seals are protected from damage by the suit, no additional zips, just a comfy no hassle protection that will help prevent disastrous seal tears. The nice tight fitting neck warmer also protects the neck seal from abrasion and also sunlight. The valves are all Sitech high quality valves.

Ursuit thigh pocket.jpg ursuit thigg pocket inside.jpg
The thigh pockets as standard are brilliant. They have an external zip that has made a nice little home for my shears and spare Cave arrows. Inside a steel D ring for securing everything and a divider that fits the wet notes close to the body and keeps them separated from the other accessories. The Velcro holding them shut is ample and easy to open with thick gloves.

ursuit zip.jpg
The high quality YKK dryzip is protected by a zip that protects and keeps it dry, it also serves at a cover to keep stuff out of the suit whilst its airing with the dryzip open.

In the water it dives like most other quality Trilaminates. The thin material and excellent anatomical cut makes the suit ultra comfy, allowing a full range of movement and plenty of room for bulky undergarments, of which URSUIT make an exceptional example.

On ordering your suit, you can choose from their wide range of sizes and choose your seals/boot sizes or have a suit made to measure. I ordered my suit directly from the measurements on their website, which ask for tight skin measurements and the suit turns up with room for undergarments factored in.
At a retail of 1795 Euro, they are a lot of suit for very reasonable Money. I couldn***8217;t be more happy with it and foresee years of reliable service from it.

Good review on a new suit. Looks nice, and comes with what seems the appropriate price tag. :deal:

What would bea REALLY good thing is to follow up with it say after 6 months of good use, so we know how it lasts and if there are any issues as it ages.

cheers

I really like how much room there is in the cut of the zip protecting outer closure. The Bare I have is an arse in that there is next to no material to spare so the inner zip clashes with the outer and makes it harder to use.

Nice looking suit, a fella I dive with is Finnish and has a different model. Very nice workmanship.

Ta for the review.

Nice review. I'm not an owner so I votes for the wasted 5mins! With hindsight this didn't do you justice, but voting again I have no clue!

Cheers
Matt.

Great review and great pics too. I am a happy owner of this suit too and can't agree more with your experience.
The breathability of the material and the light weight are amazing, a great suit!

I just wanted to add to Rob's post, as my wife and I just picked up two new Ursuit BDSs from Southern Cross Divers in Sydney. We decided on the Ursuit over the Santi E.lite, due to the Kevlar reinforced breathable fabric, lighter and that it was better value for money.

To start with they are fantastic, the build quality is excellent and the design has really good attention to detail. Such as the pockets, which have a rod in the opening flap making them very easy to grab to open. Inside the pocket the d-rings are very well engineered, they are similar to the d-rings on the JJ harness. The braces are wide and with well-made tightening buckles.

I haven't been able to find anything which faults the suit yet, which is outstanding considering the price.

We went for a few upgrades over the standard suit which you may or not know about;

1) Tech dry boot with soft sole
These are similar to the DUI Turbo Soles but better. They allow for a tighter fit to your legs and have the same velcro strap which tightens the fabric further reducing any unnecessary air around your legs. But the sole comes slightly up the back with a ridge, which stops both the fin strap digging in and from moving around. Also, unlike the DUI equivalents, there is side reinforcement and the sock has a rubber front to reinforce the sock and prevent the sole detaching from the sock, which appears to be a common issue with the DUI.

2) SiTech Antares oval ring system
These allow a 30 second installation of new seals and/or dry-gloves, in fact my wife tried 3 different sized seals until she had the right size. Took less than 5 minutes, including the time it took Baz to make the trips in and out of the shop. They come with silicone seals which are much more stretchy and comfortable. Not sure how their life compares to latex seals though.

3) Neoprene neck seal glide skin
These are similar to the O-three versions, 3mm thick with a special covering making them easier to don/doff.

We've only had one dive in them so far, but first impressions are outstanding. But best of all and the first time in a very long time no trapped air around my feet!

I have seen the suit in SDS Watersports, Sheffield Uk. Look well made and robust priced at £1100.

On their website if it helps.

Dickie.

Any chance of that 6-month review Rob? My LDS have started stocking these and I'm very tempted to try one out.

I have a TLS now but miss the reassuring ruggedness of my old CLX and this looks like the perfect compromise.

I've had a Ursuit Heavy Light BDS delivered this week, I've not dived it yet but first impressions, a very high quality product. I've brought out to Korea with me to use whilst running a military rebreather training course, I'll let you now how I get on. Rgds Paul

Just got myself one a week ago and it's great. I didn't like trilaminate suits but since I don't fit anymore in my old compressed neoprene one (for sure it shranked in the closet), I thought I'll give it a try to this Heavy Light BDS that everybody talks about. Great piece of kit, probably the best drysuit that I ever owned.
