OC Trimix - Are you kidding me?

yes, sorry if that came off harsh. In back to mback days of Rb diving in the keys, I used air dil and 17/40, water temp was above 80 F, The air dil felt like a sauna, the He mix would go in really cool and the warm up, but not as much as the air. Then a shot of He dil was like drinking cool water. Keep in mind I do not get cold until the temps are in the 60's and I do get uncomfortable when the water is too warm. So, that's how it works for me.

That has not been my experience so that is why I asked.

OK, I get the fact that diving a CCR means adding in cells and sorb. However it seems that there is no need to service OC equipment as everyone who talks about CCR being more expensive quotes CCR service but not OC service costs?

I brought that up. I was assuming that stages would need serviced which is common to both OC and CCR. In addition, the cost of servicing cylinders is likely to be the same for Dil & O2, and twinset. Therefore, depending on the unit, the servicing costs are on top of the what would be required for OC.

I agree

But of course the end result of going CCR is you don't bother servicing tanks any more. Get Js of premix and decant.

Sorry but we all know the 02 service on tanks is a joke. The industrial sector uses a 10 year retest on tanks which i think id reasonable but we use 12 or is it 18 now?) months and a bit more for Hydro because we get our tanks wet.

OK fine but getting tanks wet is only a problem if you empty said tank.

When i was on OC i had to keep everything in test so i could get shop fills when traveleing.

Now i only reely need my three bailouts in test (only one of them is) just in case i need to use them on a week long gig and need a refill.

Mark - what set up do you use for decanting? - what sort of cost are you looking at to get the Js of premixed trimix?

I got my cylinders tested and it cost me a fortune...

Its hard to cost as I baught all my stuff 7 years ago

I have pre mix Js of 21/35 18/45 and 10/70 and two Js of 02 I did this because I could but for my diving range 40-80m I could easily get away with a J of 21/35 and another of 10/70

I have the most basic mini booster can buy which cost me about £800.00

You need a 10 bar electric compressor to run the mini booster and that will set you back about £150

My mini booster good for 275 bar

Down here in Oz most of the OC trimix divers are switching to rebreathers, I did. Most of the non industry divers dive air to 50m and will reluctantly use trimix, often just carrying a travel bottle of mix to use at depth with air in their back gas. The number of 12l twins for sale is increasing rapidly. Here in Oz we have to hydro out tanks annually so the cost of having lots of tanks for OC is another reason to go to a rebreather. I had 2 sets of 12l twins, one for trimix on for nitrox and then 2 11l ALi's and 2 5l ali's for travel and deco. Annual hydro and O2 clean bill was about $600au. Now I have a rEvo: 2x 3l steel (dil and O2) and 2 x 11l Ali and one 5l Ali for various combinations of bailout as required. So my hydro bill is significantly lower.

Helium is around 7-8 cents per litre so a 18/45 OC trimix dive is around $180 with deco gas. (O2 is about 4 cents per litre) These are shop prices not blend and home prices.

By 'non industry' I refer to the fact that a lot if not most instructors charge their students for the instructors gas bill.

Last time I did a dive holiday in Truk I had a $1200us gas bill for 2 weeks, now it would cost me about $300us for the same dives.

Rebreathers are tool for the job and they excel at deep diving. OC below 40m is a waste of time IMO.

So, now that the summer months are starting to turn to fall, I'm curious if everyone still feels the same way about the number of OC Trimix divers vs. CCR Trimix divers.

Although I am still seeing the occasional OC Trimix diving team they tend to be more light normoxic mix kind of fills and very few hypoxic fills for the OC guys. I'm sure the hypoxic OC guys are out there, but from the boats I've been on this season, it has been highly skewed towards CCR for the hypoxic dives. Same goes for the cave divers I've seen around.

Anyone's experience different from mine this summer?

I've seen two people do serious OC trimix dives in the last 5 years. All the divers I know who are still diving deep wrecks are now on CCR.

The last bottle of helium i bought in the Victoria area, I wanna say was ~300 CAD for my dive buddy and me. Can't remember exactly as it was 4 -5 months ago and i ended up having to relocate back to the Calgary area (read land locked with crappy lakes) for work. The gas is not cheap for us here.

I'm sure the Seattle area people have a slightly lower cost then us.

How much is He for you lot?

Jeez we would love those prices!

Rumour has it the latest ship to arrive in Australia bringing helium supplies was found to be contaminated and turned away.

No-one seems to be able to find breathing grade helium anywhere at the moments and costs are being quoted between $1600 and $2000 for a G if they could even get you any.

That makes a twinset fill of 21/35 work out to about $500!!!!

Suddenly a ccr is looking cheap!

Ouch! I thought we had it rough!!

Wow, that hurts!

In NorCal the technical diving scene is predominately normoxic OC. I'm imagine that will change with the cost of helium. Keep your doubles, they make for good gas banks!

I See more and more deep air diving... And especially here in china lots of people taking GUE classes but never really practicing trimix diving again... But want to go on a trip once a year for some serious cave or wreck dives...

However lots of people are still having preconceptions about safety and maintenance on rebreathers... Initial costs are quite huge as well... So they rather take an oc trimix course and just do or one or big dives a year on tmx...

All in all questionable development...

Cheers

Wow I would be looking for a new suplier, I was quoted $530 recently for a G of Supagas standard grade He down here in Hobart which is the same price I have been paying for the past year when I quizzed my supplier about He availability, they had stopped supplying party balloon shops but would continue to make He available to divers.

My last 2 bottles were 250$ each. I know folks that get bulk, though shops, etc that pay less.

Nice

In the UK a J of he is about $400 localy

So twin 15s of 18/45 would cost $108 just in He

13/65 twin 15ws would be $156.00 in He

With blending costs thats gort to be $150 -200 per dive

In washington its $96.00 so id guess $125.00 for a 13/65 fill?

Then theres the deco gas?

When i was dong 50-75m diving on OC id use twin 15s and two 10ltr deco tins. So theres 20ltrs of nitrox to consider.

Someone tell me what would a 45min dive to 60m cost in OC gas even in Washington State? I know in the UK I was paying £150

People have me roling about on the floor laughing when they mention topping off fills for the next dive and saving money.

When we dived deep OC, getting back on the boat with 20-30bar in our tanks was the norm.

CCR has increased my average bottom time by 40-50% and reduced my gas cost including CCR consumables by 90%

When i sell my CCR it will be because all my future diving will be single tank air.

Everyone around here has contacted Supagas, coregas, BOC and Linde. None have any breathing grade He!

Suppliers are apparently talking about price being $1600 if they could get some.

Chriso in Perth has been told $2000.

If you can get it I would grab a couple of G's if I were you!

People here are looking at diving industrial grade (welding) He as thats all thats available
