One Finnish rebreather diver died at Font Estramar, France 10.6.2017

Lately I have been lazy about putting my line cutter on my computer strap where I find it easy to locate and deploy rapidly if needed. I have been lazy because I have kept switching CCRs and got tired of putting it on and off the strap. After reading this I will be more adamant about sticking to my standard configuration so that if I find myself in a difficult situation, like what lead to this event, I will have the best chance at dealing with it.

I'm glad something will be learned. Frankly, this surprises me. Whatever kind of line cutter you use, I'm sure you can get extra sheaths and put one on each rebreather's controller. Or an entire extra line cutter. Very cheap insurance to make sure you dive safely.

I always have 2 I just have been keeping one in a pocket out of laziness. It is not hard to put on the wrist strap. Should be easy to correct.

Apologies for asking a stupid question, but what sort of buoyancy loss are we looking at in a scooter implosion scenario? Ballpark.

well it goes from neutral to close to the dry land weight. for modern scooter on the order of +14-18kgs

A short translate :
Frédéric Swierczynski dive to 234 meters, found the body.
A vidéo of the place are done.
he took the diving computer on the diver.
No problem for the divers team, just a little injury out of the water.
The judge ask if it's possible to extract the body, the answer is " no for the SSF, to dangerous at this depth"

Just to share, if interesting for someone. Aiming to mitigate the consequences of a sudden flooding of the scooter I've implemented the use of two hooks on the towing line. A standard one to secure the scooter when necessary to be left unattended and a "safety release one" with a sort of handle on the release pin to facilitate the disconnection during towing.

If I get a run away scooter, I'm throwing a light into the prop, or my hand if I have to.

It was not a runaway scooter.
The scooter imploded and became quite negativly buoyant.
This caused the diver to be pulled down violently by the scooter.

ah, thank you for the correction.

ouch, how fast can you get to your dive knife under that kind of stress.

Being near an imploding scooter is like being near a big firecracker underwater, it isn't good for you and you will need time to recover (at least a few seconds)

A lot of similar aspects to this incident as Dave Shaw's. High work rate with a dense gas is not a nice combination, very sad for the divers family and friends
