Whislist for future Sentinel

whishes for future Sentinel

I quit Facebook, maybe we can get a little bit more life in here then.

Here how I see the future Sentinel, in my opinion on of the best CCRs out there, just a few things had to be optimized in my opinion:

Hoses are to big and heavy, also to long, why not use coopers like on Ouroboros, safe weight and gain WOB as they are more flat inside. Also safe us lead as much less gas inside.
A box with possibilty of using 3liter tanks would be much apreciated and self standing. Also a design wich allows to take off the breathing hoses without opening the box would be great.
The current red head is great, solve all complains about sensor accesability and other optocom problems, and is much lighter (3kg according VMS).

So in a nutshell: A lighter, easy to handle unit with possibilty of 3l tanks, lets say 30 KG dive ready and not the need of so much lead then before, I believe mostly due to these very big and long hoses.

Hope VMS read here and I welcome all Sentinel divers for their input. I sold mine only because I have a Boris. It was beside the Boris the best unit I had, and which I feeled safe. Main concern was a total weight of 52 Kg including lead needed to get down, this is 5KG more than a Boris...

Ah yeah, and maybe a box which allows to fit any standard backplate...

The most ideas to optimize are taken from Ouroboros hehe.

Cheers, Patrick

Cooper hoses are not necessarily better, they do have potential issues of collapsing internally

Make the loop shorter and lighter. Make the mouthpiece of barrel-design.
Redesign the electronics making one handset and a decent HUD with simple lights that do not resemble a discotheque - preferably just red and green.
3L cylinders.
Add a second counter-lung, preferably OTS, but back-mounted could be an option.
Make the case smaller and preferably in yellow.

Matt.

Shit then you have a JJ painted yellow :D

he is refering to an Inspo... But I want a Sentinel with all his innovations, just lighter and able for 3L bottles. And the HUD is the best one I had, a discotheque is on the MEG.

???? Are you sures you had a meg?? On the meg you have a green and red led and they are not quite bright. Also the Meg doesn't look like you are carrying a fridge on your back!!

yes I had a meg to test for a few weeks, so i did several dives on it. I feeled not confortable on it. The hoses to short for me and also quite stiff, so i cannot move my head, the hud is useless as it flashes all the time and the displays unreadable. Also bulky and heavy unit. But it's bullet proof and breathes good.

The Sentinel looks maybe like a fridge but at least you can move your head and the chest is clear which is golden for stage handling.

The reason you are moving your head so freely is cause the hoses are giant. If you put those sleek coopers on you won't be turning your head so easy anymore.

I recently had a great opportunity to inspect in detail the new iteration Sentinel. Martin Stanton (VMS) spent a long time taking me through the very well thought through innovations and improvements which have come together under VMS' direction. I had previously owned an early stock Sentinel (#96) which had never let me down but which I had disposed (pre VMS) primarily as the longevity and viability of VR Technology was potentially suspect. I also hated the sprung-loaded canister loading mechanism with a passion. My head was turned by a JJ CCR...

Nevertheless, with history in the unit it was an education to see the transformation. The new Red Head, CO2 monitoring, redesigned box all added up to making a good impression, however...

I think VMS have missed a trick and seem to have concentrated on the strategy of keeping exiting adopters wedded to their units with options and upgrades instead of starting again with a clean sheet of paper. It may sound cruel, but the idiom "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" springs to mind. The electronics remain 'VRX like', the can loading is unchanged, an inflexible configuration persists and the damn thing is still a fecking rhinoceros on your back.

Yes, you'll see a rack of late model Sentinels at Vobster which is hardly surprising as its the home of VMS. Elsewhere, they just don't seem to figure in any meaningful way. With similarly priced contenders like the JJ CCR, Hammerhead, Liberty and X CCR, the choice is a no-brainer and you'll be guaranteed a ready second-hand market and a decent residual value.

Just my 0.02...

I haven't looked at one as they don't interest me, but this is as good a summary as I could make.

We say "you cannot polish a turd" though in my neck-of-the-woods :-)

why this? on the Boris are coopers and I love them

Because they are going to be shorter than the giant ones on there now. Same complaint you had about the meg.

Personally I don't mind the short-ish meg hoses and the limited ability to turn my head compared to OC. I'd rather turn "me" than have giant loops of hose out past my shoulders.
