When did you begin rebreather diving?

CCR Josh

"Rebreather Enthusiast"
I was going through some old dive logs the other night and came across what I believe is my first ever rebreather dive! I thought it would be fun to see if anyone else had their original rebreather dive logged and could share with us. It is always fun to look back and reminisce!

  • Date: August 10 2002
  • Location: Blue Lake, UT USA
  • Dive number: 94
  • Rebreather model: Draeger Dolphin (actually an Atlantis that was converted to a Dolphin)
  • Story to go along with it: Typical 17 year old behavior- I took apart my rebreather (can't remember why?) between this first dive and the second dive that day. For some reason I thought I would just do it real quick without the instructor seeing and did not complete my checks once it was put back together. Descended to about 10' / 3m, heard the gurgling and had my one and only caustic cocktail  I had pinched the main gasket in the scrubber and had a large, obvious gaping opening for the water to flood the unit. Only took me that once to learn my lesson about pre-dive checks;)

It's nice to have a paper history of the dives, especially at moments like this.

Bayswater Waves - MOD1 Confined Water Session
#555
Insp. Classic
Notes: "Wow! Quiet until machine gun gurgle, crazy buoyancy, otherwise very cool"

It took me a couple of dives (had to bail out on the 1st open water course dive) to realise my partial flooding wasn't a leak: I just wasn't switching the DSV all the way to the stop so it was getting in that way.

A couple of mates are going through the MOD1 now (finally coming to the dark side) and it's interesting reading my log from the course and the first few dives because it sounds so familiar to what they're saying. Buoyancy and trim are out the window but getting better, must remember to check both handsets more often, how dry is the bucket at the end of the dive and so on.

July 2004 Capenwray (Inland puddle of water otherwise known as Crap-n-Rain) Inspo Classic, Prism, Meg and some other PSCR unit I cant remember the name off (Think it was an Azamoth or something like that?) It was a CCR try day.

Baught a Inspo Classic in August the same year and did my first proper dive in the September out of Dover on an old steem ship.

2015 Drager Dolphin - converted to an mCCR and then alot of personal modifications, Poseidon Mark VI

June 2012. With a my new hammerhead 8,000 ft above sea level inside of a mountain in a chamber of solid rock in 101 degree boiling water weightless and warm, feeling like i was in the womb very surreal! Oh yeah on top of that my instructor was one of the thornton boys, you know the crazy one, JOSHUA!

I remember my first breather dive was on a Dolphin in the Red Sea in 2004. It took me another 10 years to get around to buying my own unit. Happy with my choice (JJ) but wish I'd done it sooner!

nov 2007. west coast of scotland. inspo vision.

swam around in 10 feet of water just waiting for it to kill me thinking about two very experienced divers I knew personally that had died using rebreathers, which is what had been putting me off going CCR for years.

2006 got a try dive on a Mk15.5, that got me hooked in about 6m of water. After that I did my first homebuilt, then went to an inspo followed by my Boris which I still dive

Winter 1993/4 try dive with Peter Ready, the father of the PRISM.
Dived under a bridge on the upper reaches of the river Tamar on the Devon Cornwall border. Saw a couple of eels and a salmon on what was officially the coldest dive of my life. Needless to say, course of life/career changed forever. Now running a home for unloved rebreathers and still haven't thawed out.

Thanks Peter

2001 with a Drager Dolphin SCR, jumping into a AP Inspiration eCCR in 2003 (back before it was called the Classic) only to cross over to a KISS Sport mCCR in 2006. Since then, I have stayed the mCCR route moving up from the Sport to the KISS Classic in 2010, which I still dive today.

September 2012 with a rEvo try dive under the Portsea Pier Victoria, Australia, then put an order in for a rEvo and did my Mod 1 in January 2013.

Sunday 3rd Jan, 2016. A 26 minute dive at 6m in Stoney Cove with an Inspo Classic bought on eBay whilst drunk... That's the purchase, not the dive, by the way.

Sommer 97 or probably 98 with SCR Dräger.
2000 I did my homebuild, 2003 Inspiration and beginning of 2005 the Ouroboros (still with me, up and running).
A Pathfinder wich is a really nice and easy to dive unit.
Now VMS RedBare and Liberty are what I use and teach.
The time keep flowing but the Wish to keep my nose in toose toys it's always as the beginning, such I nice way to spent your time!
