The guy that repaired my leather bike jacket says he can sew all kind of things like that. Shoe repair guy said the same.

For what its worth, my CL's are also sewn down along the 'inner' edges. It makes lungs more manageable while still providing ample volume. Only down side I've found is that the lungs take a bit longer to fully dry (negligibly so). Between that mod and removing most of the hook and loop keepers, you'll have a set of almost bulletproof and comfortable lungs. I do have a set of BMCL's on the way though that I'm looking forward to testing.

I think you will find it heavy going for most sewing machines. Some heavy thread and a leather needle worked for me. Not even a two pint job!

Sewn mine by hand as Peter above, I followed Philippe's advice....works like a charm
