I constantly see that a majority of my students and colleagues that dive rebreathers use apple products. I am doing a poll to see if that is just what I see or if it is true elsewhere.
Hopefully it will help the manufacturers prioritize whether the need to make their software for downloads/upgrades work on a mac exists.

In the poll you can vote for more than 1 response.

Never seen a Mac run by a diver. Not here, not in the Red Sea. Perhaps Mac is more widely used in the US? Although it's difficult to compare, but two months ago when buying a new laptop to the wife a Mac would cost roughly about twice the money of a PC for the same functionality.
I (we) don't mind using Mac and think the design is superior to any PC, but that's not worth the extra money.

Being a former very early years Microsoftie (1984-2003) I'm a PC bigot, and you will know when hell has truly frozen over, when there's an Apple product in my house. :)

My son is fond of the Ipad, I tolerate my iPhone but after recently trying a macbook for a week I consider throwing them both away out of pure principle. Worthless piece of crap. Anything serious should be done on a proper computer.

I use all of the above. You can never have enough gadgets :)

(written on an Apple PowerBook running Windows in Oracle Virtual Box. Checked on Android phone and tablet, double checked on iPhone and iPad)

At least you agree that it should work on all gadgets :wiggle:

I have always used pc's before, switched to mac and i will never go back :naughty:

Everything synchronized , phones, laptop's , mac, .... my music straight to my car to listen.....

Before on pc I always had different bugs, spam, ....not on mac anymore (almost not)

Also editing video's , photo's ...i like more on apple products.

But i guess today al products are almost capable of doing nice things.

It appears not everyone has responded to the last 2 questions. Those are the most important. Whether you use PCs or Macs may be irrelevant to how you feel about the last 2 questions.
Thanks everyone :stomp:

It would take a rather egocentric, visionless and narrow minded software developer who isn't aware of the need for compatibility between different OS platforms.

If some are still living in their personal Narnias, I doubt this thread will redress their limitations. So, if a piece of software doesn't fit my personal choice of computer, they can go take a flying... :naughty:

cheers

Andy

Manufacturers need to cater for both.......unless they come free with the course :flypig:

I have a PC only because I cant justify spending my CCR dive cash on a Apple Mac.

Nexus 7 tablet is next on my list to complement my android phone........

David.

Only run mac here. 6 iPhones, 2 iMacs, 1 mac mini, 2 MacBooks, Apple TV, air play, time machine, etc etc etc.

I know I'm the odd one. I only use Linux at home.

Phone is a Linux derived android phone but will certainly move to an Ubuntu phone when it becomes available.

Only Macs here (although I must admit to using Windows7 in a Parallels environment in order to run our SAP stuff at work). First Mac in 1991, started working with Apple fulltime through one of Europes largest premium resellers in 2004, and still there today. Thrilled that Shearwater supports Mac fully, not too happy that Apples bluetooth implementation in iOS doesn't support the necessary transfer protocols to sync directly between a Predator and an iPad... Someone needs to get Tim Cook hooked on diving and get him some CCR with a Predator controller. Then for sure we'll either have full integration/iOS support or an awesome iController of some sort by next year. Any takers in the Cupertino area?

US companies tend to use an exchange rate of USD 1.0 = GBP 1.0, see this with books, US dive kit & Macs. Makes stuff expensive in UK at least so tend not to buy, instead go for cheaper PC's.....

Look at back of an IT book you'll see price as for example US$25, £25 when it should be £16!!

We get this a lot at work, but a very common "mistake" is that people disregard the fact that all US stores quote prices excluding sales tax (value added tax). And they also have the rather strange rule that if you purchase stuff online from another state, there's no tax at all (no wonder the economy is shot over there...:) ). Whereas if you go into a store and purchase stuff, the tax is added at the checkout, although it's for the most part rather low (around 6-11%) compared to what we're used to here in Europe (20-25%). In Norway - and a lot of other countries here - it's actually illegal to quote prices excluding VAT as long as your marketing targets consumers.

However - a 1:1 ratio on USD excl tax and GBP incl tax (20% in UK?) is still slightly off, should be more like 1:0,8 or something, but not as low as 1:0,65.

For the USD/GBP cost equivalence you need to look at base dollar cost + shipping cost times import duty (variable depending on the item) + VAT @ 20% on the lot. It usually works out somewher near equivalence at a usual 1.5 USD/GBP exchange rate. Doesn't matter whether the item is new or second hand, if it enters the UK you do the same sum.

There's no justification for charging 1:1 when the pound is riding high against the dollar, at that point I order stuff direct from the states.

Oh and I use a mac at home and a PC at work which means I usually end up having to lug both around with me.

Here in Denmark a Mac and a divetimer is priced equivalent to a PC and a Shearwater computer.

That makes my choice very easy :-)

As others have said any sensible person today realises that software has to work across different platforms and OS.

Recently bought my first smartphone waterproof and a fraction of the price of a femIphone.
I have no need to be online all the time and though it works, reading forums on such a small screen is not my cup of tea.

Best regards

Bo

I have used Apple computers almost exclusively since 1990.

I HATE installing windows on my Apple computer, it's like installing cancer by choice :)

I only use Macs at home and at work. Ok at work I am sometimes forced to grudgingly use a desktop PC but thanks to the BYOD wave I can usually take in one of my mac laptops.

On my Bikini trip last year, over half the divers had brought Mac Laptops.
