Lightweight backplate

evening all,

Has anyone used, or currently sting, a lightweight backplate i.e. The non metal variety?

I'm interested to hear feedback and sources.

My aluminium plate weighs 300g. How light do you need one to be?

So the driver is reduced weight for traveling. When you're packing along a family, every Kg you can fee up in the suitcase is an added bonus. I prefer plate and webbing rather than standard bulky harness.

When I was thinking about plastic/composite, I remember Garspeed from this very site displaying one on his G-box which he claimed was super light.

I second the carbon variety for shedding weight. I have friends diving them in Spain with no problems. I need more weight when I dive dry, so I keep my SS and attach a V-weight to it.

One of my buddies uses a plastic backplate with his Inspo and doesn't have any problems (Dive Rite ABS, I think?). I've had one, and didn't find that it saved much weight over an AL plate. I got better weight savings by changing things like the waist buckle and tank brackets. I'm currently using a DR Transpac, but I don't think it's any lighter than an AL plate.
