Indicating lime

I've recently (dive wise as opposed to calendar wise) installed a temp stick and it's been interesting.


Got home, dumped it. Indicator active about halfway through but then looked clean - even though the reaction front was apparently a lot further along.

Interesting to see the disparity between what I'd expect (the indicator to be present 3/4 or more through the bed) and what happened, and another -for me- reminder to just ignore that dye.

You may be waiting too long to check on the indicator. I ran thru a tub of the stuff and found that if I surfaced and pulled the can I would see much purple, if I waited, it faded.

I came to the conclusion that it was a waste of time for our purposes.

Good point. By the time I get out of the water, get the boat back to the ramp, wash down and stow it, get my gear home, give it a soak, then pull it out of the tub and strip it we're looking at 4-5 hours. But, even if that explained it and I wanted to use it, I'm not super keen on pulling my scrubber apart onboard a smallish boat to check.

My conclusion (for me) is that it's just something to ignore.

With the new tempstick I'm waiting to see the difference between the 812 and the 797 - I may well end up back on 797 if it gives me sufficiently longer to justify the extra $$ and in that case the indicator question just goes away.

I'm sure you know this but just in case, the temp stick is only said to be reliable with 797 , other limes will give inaccurate readings. There's a few threads , mails, FB posts from Martin Parker about this topic.

812 is specified to be able to convert 100g of CO2 per Kg sorb, 797 is specified at min 140g per Kg Sorb. IOW 797 can absorb 40% CO2 per Kg.
Unfortunately, the WOB can become excessive with long and full non-radial scrubbers using 797 without Helium (case in point is my SF2 filled up to the top screw with 797).

With 797 I am happy to go to "last 2 blocks". With others I treat the last 3 as exhausted (pure guess work though).

Just a side comment:
Never empty out your scrubber after a dive to see how much has turned violett and then refill the already used sorb back into the canister. This can possibly lead to much eralier brake through of the scrubber. There are many (older) discussions on this topic.

Not an AP temp stick, it's part of an AV1 setup. Got sick of Classic electronics issues.

Yep, and that's consistent with what other guys are getting on 797. My next fill will be 797 and I'll be interested to see how it goes.

WHilst I can see the point of a C02 sensor that works (not invented a decent one yet) I am not particularly interested in other forms of scrubber monitor.


The temperature of the water has always defined how long I can dive on a single dive and in warm water (20c+) I am happy to run six hours on a Inspo sized scrubber (or my KISS or JJ)

The issue comes with multiple dives rather than single dives (unless your punching very deep) and on multiple dives I have the time to change the lime so I generaly do

only time i have pushed it on multiple dives is Mexico caves where I have done arround six hours over multiple dives, but its warm water and less than 20m diveing so I was not concerned.


If my unit came with a temp stick I wouldent take it off but if it broke I wouldent bother repairing it
