in the manual for my rebreather it states quite categorically that the absorbent should be discarded "after one year storage in the unit".

I am quite comfortable to leave absorbent in my scrubber for 2 or three months if I need to. Have done it. I am still in the same state that i was before I tested my theory out. Some would say that that state is "alive"; others, less charitable, would argue I was never alive in the first place.
