HMS Vanguard - Scapa Flow, Centenary Exped Pictures

Hi all

I was lucky enough to be involved a project to document the wreck of the WW1 battleship HMS Vanguard that was undertaken to mark the 100th anniversary of her sinking in Scapa Flow. We dived extensively over the winter of 2016/17 and then again briefly on the anniversary to document the changing of the ensign.

Vanguard blew up at anchor late on the night of the 9th July 1917 taking 843 sailors with her, she is now a designated war grave so to be given permission to dive and to be joined by the Royal Navy dive team was a real privilege.

There is a full survey report in the process of being edited and will be released soon but these are some banners that we had produced for presentations around the centenary, I hope you enjoy! There are keys to what is displayed on each banner towards the bottom of the post.

As with anything like this it was a massive team effort, everyone is listed on the attached banners.

I was lucky enough to attend the presentation in Orkney earlier in the year & it was very interesting with various members of the team talking about their areas of expertise.

Cheers guys. Yes it was very interesting (especially if battleships are your 'thing'). Vanguard has a direct tie to the original HMS Dreadnought, the grand father of the 20th century big gun ship. She is the last example of that.

Once the report is finished I'll share that.

Cheers!
