Gurgling at the exhaust T-Piece

Hello,

I am using the SG BMCL's on another unit and while they have worked out great I am experiencing a prominent gurgling sound on the exhaust side t-piece. The sound does not start up until about 70-90 minutes into the dive, however, it gets exceptionally prominent when even in the slightest head-down attitude in the water.

I was planning on dropping the CL's down on the backplate in order to try and position the t-pieces higher up on my shoulders to see if that works. Post dive there definitely seems to be a slightly excessive amount of moisture in the exhaust CL (20ml's about).

I understand that the fact these CL's are on a different unit that compatibility is not going to be as clean as if it were on the Defender. I have never had any issues on pos/neg tests.

Just wondering if this is ever an issue on the Defender or if it is likely a configuration issue on my setup.

I never had any issue like this in the 10 months of diving my Defender. It does sound like you are getting too much water in the CL though. If the pos and neg tests are passing then perhaps you need to check your mouthpiece for cracks or bad seal on the DSV, or maybe the lever o-ring is leaking.

I would also add that since the water dump does NOT have a one way valve on it, so it is critical when dumping water, you follow the following steps:

1. Add Dil using the the Dil MAV
2. Open dump valve
3. Close dump valve
4. Release Dil MAV

If you do not follow this order of steps every single time you want to flush water out of the SG BMCL, you will actually allow more water into the BMCL and defeat your purpose.

As Don said above, please check your mouthpiece to ensure that you don't have a small hole. Provided that you don't have a leak somewhere, you typically should not have enough water in the BMCL to necessitate having to flush it out unless you are doing a several hour dive in which case it may be necessary to follow the steps above.

Spent over 2 years trying different DSVs and mouthpieces to eliminate the gurgling on the exhaust side of a SF2. Finally solved the problem by switching to a US Divers ComfoBite small mouthpiece. No more water on the exhaust side, just the disgusting slime that is left over from my breathing after several hours.

OSEL bought and tested more than a dozen different BCD dumps as commonly sold for used for CL dump valves, and did not find any that were ideal so designed a custom water-dump which has a one way valve in it. Noting it needed seven new injection moulded parts and two new moulded seals: this was not a trivial exercise but the improved design might remove a critical element for you.

Awesome Randy, thanks. Since testing the new setup out I have been exclusively practicing de-watering as its quite different than with the CMCL's.

I agree with you and Don that the mouthpiece/dsv is the likely culprit and will attack that next.

Well Brad you actually got my interest with one of your post, but there is no picture or description of what of the part when you follow the link. So, what is it, does it replace a standard dump valve or do you need a counter-lung with the correct flange?

Cferrar, sold as an assy it is the ‘standard’ CL dump valve complete as fitted on the bottom of the Apoc and their other RB CLs.

Flange is part of the assy. That seals on the 3D CL reinforced port.

If SG CLs come with a flange you would need to know the thread specs to confirm compatibility. Same for needing port bore if fitted with reinforced rings.
