Dive Rite - One Handed Reel - DEMA 2015

I was excited until "Then, when we reel it up" where he needs two hands. :(

Nice looking bit of kit though.

You sound like me. There was a product in development years ago called the Autoreeler. It was a self winding reel, similar to some fishing reels out there. Self-centering and virtually jam-proof. But the company gave up on development due to the high cost. I thought it was worthwhile to have a way of reeling in while riding a scooter. But the finished product would have needed a price of about $1800 U.S.

Drop a hank of the line in your prop when it's running. "No-hands" reeling in that way, at least for a little while :)

You could come up with an extension on the prop with a reel attached ;)

This looks cool. Be nice if the spool was delrin. I don't think it necessarily solves a problem, but it's convenient.

maybe it's just me being dim but can someone tell me why this is 'an awesome improvement' rather than a pointless complication?

it strikes me it's effectively a ratchet reel.

Those of us who do lots of cave exploration never worry about reeling the line back onto the reel. We worry about running out of line and where a good tie off place is before we cut it and survey out.
Now for the weekend worriers, you dont have to reel in the gold line, it is already placed for you.

Plus I don't run the reel, I run the camera....

"Weekend warriors... AKA ... Vacation Cave Divers." That's me. We worry about making sure the line we lay on the way to the gold line won't be a highlight of CDF for the next 6months... ;)

No, I'm not referring to vacation cave divers. After all those responses I had to double check that I hadn't magically slipped into CDF.

We use reels when wreck diving, guys. Man does not live by caves alone. We dive in limited vis both inside and outside the wreck. And we don't leave the line, nor do we have gold line to follow. Lose your way back and you could have a very bad day. So the Autoreeler would have been a welcome addition. But the prop extension might have to be considered.
