Accident on the Doria

I joined the crowed and just got done rebuilding my inflator too. I always carry a couple of spare ones and never really considered a failure to be that big of a thing to deal with under water. I have since changed my mind and will make this a regular maintenance item now.

I use only the Sherwood inflators and have never had a problem with them in 27 years of diving. Heard horrible stories about the metal inflators used by Halcyon, thankfully I've never had a need to buy a Halcyon inflator.

I think the power inflator is one the the oft neglected pieces of dive gear. Most people know to rebuild their regulator every year or two but not to many overhaul the power inflator on the same interval. It is usually a use-it-until-it-acts-up sort of thing. I've usually thought loss of buoyancy to be the big issue but auto inflate could be just as big an issue.

I just did my inflator a couple weeks ago. A friend (who has every tool) didn't have the one for an inflator rebuild. So I ordered him one off Dive Gear Express. The tool and an O-ring kit is something like $6. The O-ring kit is $3 and probably a lot cheaper if you source them yourself. Cheap insurance.

A good fresh inflator does not need to be treated like a digital device. Lubed and fresh it is easy to throttle the air.

Sucks when something simple causes so much grief. I do hope to make it to the Doria someday, just be careful when doing so.
