AP Inspiration and ... sidemount ... to do an bob config

Hi everybody,

I still own an AP Inspiration. As I see more and more diver with sidemount ccr (flex and liberty ones), I wonder if I can convert my Inspiration in an tube ccr like the flex or the liberty one.
So I will get a bob for my deepest dive (ie 100m+ 30'+)

Before starting this adventure, I post this thread to see if anyone has already some retex on this kind of configuration ...

What about switching to a bob which is in sidemount configuration (not even a little bit backmounted like recommended with the joki)... especially during deep dive.

If the bob will be build as the canister in the down side of the tube, in the upper side of the tube, putting 2 x 1.5L with the 2 counterlung, what about counterlung config.
Do you put them up and down in the tube and the 2x1.5L on the left and the right or putting the 2x1.5L up and down and the 2 couternlungs on left and right. What are the place of the inspiration/expiration counterlungs?

If doing the tube your self, what kind of material do you use?

Thanks in advance for your idea/comment

Fred

Th liberty side mount seems like something close to what you mention you want, that uses a frame instead of a tube. The counter lungs will want to be the high point when full of gas so it makes sense to have the bottles below the counter lungs to stop any rotation from going on when breathing in and out. Because of the external down tube of the scrubber the tube would have to be very big to encompass the whole thing, some people leave the dip tube sticking out the side (probably needs some sort of protection).

I would start by mocking up a 'frame' (like the liberty), a flat piece of wood with the scrubber fixed at one end, the counter lungs above and the bottles strapped the opposite side of the counter lungs and scrubber.

There's a Russian group that does a sidemount Inspo, called TDE. Can find them online (tde-rus) or on FB. They might be worth checking out.

Old thread, but has anyone used, or seen the TDE sidemount conversion for the AP unit?

I like the look of it, but can't find anything online on peoe owning/using/seing one.

I check their Facebook page every now and then. There are a few more pictures or video clips where they're using it, but nothing really meant to feature the unit, configuration, etc. Looks like they now also make a carbon fiber one, but there's still a lack of a manual, setup pics, etc.

I'd really like to see how it is set up. Like, does it need special lungs, or does it just reuse OTS lungs (or just bladders)? Same for T-pieces--reuse existing, or do they make something specific for this application?

There is a pretty good video on YouTube on the setup. It only uses the AP scrubber and head. Everything else is their own design. Lungs, t pieces, hoses, dsv etc.

I'm really tempted by it, but would like a review from someone who has one and has dived it.

Wow, I completely missed that. You'd think with a video like that, they'd link it to their product page or feature it on Facebook. I didn't think to dig through youtube, since most people just use that as a place to host videos to share on FB or their website.

It does seem really tempting. Roughly $650 for the frame, plus whatever it costs for the lungs, T-pieces, scrubber connection elbow, corrugated hoses, DSV, and maybe MAV's. I don't see prices for some of those things, like the lungs, but I wonder if it'd be possible to keep everything around a grand. Especially if you've got (or could get used) things like MAV's and DSV, I bet you could.

The one thing I noticed that would need some changes for BOB use is that I didn't see an ADV. Whether you could replace the inhale T-piece with a ADV T-piece, or install a plunger-style ADV in the lung (meg, hammerhead), it doesn't seem to be too difficult either way.

Hmm....nothing good at DEMA this year, maybe time to start saving my pennies for this.

I have been in touch with them and have an excel sheet with a full breakdown of prices. If you want to send me your email via PM I can forward it on to you, but the whole lot is about €2500(ish)

I'm just considering it as a primary rebreather, as a pose to Bob. If I were to go down bail out route, I'd go for the liberty if I had the funds.

What is your opinion on it from the video?

Honestly, I'm interested because I already have an Inspo (actually 2, if you count the classic) that's not getting much love. This would be an interesting way to put it to use. I think there's some added value using the Inspo because there are plenty of third party mods--for example, you could get a blank head, add CMF and a fischer, and run it as a MCCR if desired.

If I were made of money? I'd probably be looking at the Liberty. If I were made of patience? I'd wait for the Meg ccr kit. Or I'd make one myself, a la Dsix.

I set the email over yesterday evening. Did you get it?

I like the idea of only needing to learn 1 set of electronics, only having one set of electronics to service, one set of cells to buy etc, but having 2 different ccr configurations. Let me know if you decide to go for one.

Where did you see a carbon fiber frame? That sounds good.

I put a deposit down on the complete kit last week.

I'll let you know my thoughts when it arrives. I guess coming up to Christmas and new year, I'll be waiting 6 weeks or so.

I'll post my experience with communication, lead times, and the kit and quality etc here, as this may help anyone else googling this conversation (I can't find any info on it)
