Omniswivel QD VS. Swagelok QD

Does anyone have any thoughts on which are better? It seems to me that Omniswivel are actually built for diving, Swagelok not. However, looking for example at the KISS offboard gas kit and the RedHead offboard gas kit, they all seem to use Swagelok...

I'm still thinking about my BOV and how to plumb it in. Having read a couple of incident reports, I think I like the idea of it being my regulator all the way to the surface if possible, therefore plan to run it directly to my bailout...

Hi,

Swagelok QD are self shut-off so you can disconnect them underwater without any water ingress. With the Omniswivel you'll have to add a one-way valve on each side.
Connecting a Swagelok QD underwater is not recommended as there will be a small amount of water coming inside the hose. Be aware that there is a flow direction to respect, the female part is mounted on the 1st stage, the male on the 2nd stage.

I think it's only the male sections that need the check valve. I think the female sections self close??

Male Omni's can be ordered with or without integral check valves

I have them on my KISS and they have worked fine as long as they are cleaned and lubed as required. If they are not, they become difficult the connect regardless of if lines have pressure or not.

They still let a bit of water in - check the swagelok materials - they give the specifics of how many cm3.

When you say lube them what do you mean, just a bit of silicon grease? Mine are a but hard to connect and I was wondering what to do.

Thanks

Yes, they are very easy to disassemble. Just unscrew them, being careful not to loose any of the locking mechanism ball bearings. A vinegar solution removes the salt/grime build up and a light smear of silicone grease makes them (dis)connect and seal like new again.

Replacement seal/o ring kits are available but I've never needed anything more than a clean.

If they are left too long either the check valves will seize open and pass gas even when disconnected or the locking balls will not release to allow connection or disconnection
