Replace backplate to lighten up the jj

hello anyone has ever tried to replace the backplate? I need to lighten up a little my jj unit. Thought to replace the backplate with an aluminum or carbon fiber. Bad idea? With dry suit and without weights i'm negative, And now I
let me turn to the wetsuit ...

Dave will confirm, but youre fine to use any backplate that fits as long as the "v" isn't less than the original one.. As it can restrict the counter lungs and obviously make breathing difficult.
The little halcyon one is light and tiny.. As are the dog bones..
 
Does anyone know if the Dive Rite aluminum back plate fits and dosn't restrict BMCLs? Many thanks, Tim
 
I use a Dive Rite aluminium plate when travelling. I've taken a jigsaw to it and trimmed off all the non-essential parts so it's very minimal.
 
A dog bone unfortunately dosnt work for me as I side mount my stages. But the CD full back plate looks interesting, thanks Dave. I may see you and Scruff on Thursday...
 
I use an ali back plate when traveling

With a ali plate & zero lead I am good in a very old & thin 5mm wet suit


My plate is narrow by coincidance. Its just one I had knocking arround

I thought of modifying a plate the same and then thought what do you save weight wise? for shaving two pieces 200mm x 50mm off a 3mm plate your saving 200mm x 50mm x 3mm x 2700kg/m3 = roughly 160g in air and 100g in water

I just kept the plate as is

hi mike

i am not sure if the weight reduction on these is essential i think that the main reason is to not to impede the back mounted counterlungs, might be wrong tho

That's it exactly, gives a little more room for the lungs. I've never had an issue during a dive with any of the backplates I've used but, on the surface with the wing inflated, the loop can be a bit restricted.

It also packs a little easier in my Peli 1610.

haha the 3mm of plate missing till you hit your back must make all the difference ;)

its not the 3mm that will make a difference its the gap between the box and the back plate the extra ali chopped off lets the lungs expand more, it seems

I'm not convinced either. A wide plate may stop the lungs expanding but a narrow plate is hard up against your back anyway. I'm more convinced that creating space by not having a flat back to the box will give you more room for the lungs (as the JJ and the new roiund KT travel frame do) or having wing that sits wider that the lungs would have more effect on surface breathing. Or you can just fully inflate the wing, take the loop out and breathe the atmosphere. I normally go for the latter approach.

Speaking of the round KT frame it looks interesting but doesn't appear to offer much mechanical protection to the head or scrubber, has anybody tried it?
 
how about this one made in ti bent verticaly and horizontally to give maximum clearance for lungs and super comfortable, less than a kilo on its own and 1.7 kg with harness and comfy pad .last pic with ti d rings and triglides also not sure if it fits jj you can see the bend pattern here. holes standard 280mm
