    Memories of France

Stuart and Mark's posts on another thread made me go back and look at this old trip report from 2009. I thought it might be a fun read in context of other discussions. Photo - JP Bresser 2008 France 2009 was for me always going to be a different trip. We've done Mexico Florida and Shetland...

There is a cave in France where one can go around in a circuit at depth. It's a reasonably large dive depending on how you do it, I first did this particular dive OC in 2006. Six stages, twin 15s, two scooters etc. We then started going a little further. Moved to RB 80s, took two seasons...

I don't get free flights or holidays but Ideal ready get 4 to 5 hour dives in Mexico open circuit so see no benefit in taking a CCR - even though I've already bought one ;) We're off to Grenada next year. As yet undecided on taking the unit.

    Computer on the left arm?

Put mine on the right after two dives. Not only does it make much more sense to me there for scootering etc, I couldn't bear the cable on the same arm as my dry suit dump.

Quick poll. How many of you did a full (from the bottom to the surface) bailout on your MOD 1, 2 and 3 (if those qualifications done) and when was the last time you did one from depth as a practice? Were critical skills completed on your training (1, 2 and 3) carried out neutrally buoyant?

My point is too many people can't do the easy OC version of an ascent and presume they will be ok on CCR when, as you rightly point out, it introduces additional skill requirements. When the shit hits the fan, solid skills are needed not crossed fingers. It is not that OC experience is...

Examples (which are based in fact but muddied enough so that the student is not identifiable). Student on twinset. Came to class ART qualified - so one stage and 40 meters or so. Unable to ascend with stops whilst reeling in SMB. Lost it and required instructor intervention to avoid...

Comments about individual ability are of course accurate. I'll leave you with one question though - how many divers have you come across who think that their skills are poor? Most of the students I taught came to the class thinking that they were ok - and many of these had higher level...

I did a (mock) full bailout ascent on Sunday. For me, apart from remembering to drop set point on the unit and dump the counter lungs it was a return to my old friend OC and thus very comfortable if not a bit more busy than normal. Leads me to think though. I have long been if the opinion...

Dive Rite & Analytical Industries sued for Wes Skiles death

Thanks Dave. As I tried to set out, as a forum owner I have two options. Play very safe (and shit down all discussion) or let reasonable discussion occur. Many take the former view, I choose to take the latter as I believe in being as open as possible but hope that the forum members will...

Dive Rite & Analytical Industries sued for Wes Skiles death

I understand why board owners get jumpy and delete threads. I am keen that people are able to debate issues - within the law. If you want to debate the issues facing the industry due to litigation, without open of veiled reference to any particular case, that's fine - just help me out and...

Dive Rite & Analytical Industries sued for Wes Skiles death

Interesting read. May I respectfully remind posters than matters which are to go before a court are sub judice and therefore cannot be debated specifically on here.

It is not as simple as comparing list prices and subtracting one from the other. Import duties, taxes, shipping, exchange rate fluctuation and currency cost and insurance are a bitch and add a lot to any gear bought across borders. I sold for DUI for seven years and when they cut out the...
