cleaning mouthpiece and hoses

The classic I bought was laid up for a period of time and there is a fousty (stale) smell from the exhale side of the hose. I've cleaned thoroughly a number of times with buddy clean and although smell has reduced a little the smell remains still. Any advice to remove this smell greatly appreciated.

Jas kev, you can get it from mole valley farmers out at liskeard in small packs, makes up 5 litres at a time if you need it immediately.

thanks have ordered some. After endless cleaning (now out of buddy clean) smell has started to lessen a little. will wait for Virkon to turn up and have a go.

Virkon can have a bit of a rank taste/smell to it too. Make sure you give everything (lungs especially) plenty of rinsing. I've bailed once when the taste was making me feel nauseous.

Yes. Alot better. Buddy clean is useless, AP had even stop using it.

Just for the sake of accuracy here, AP didnt stop selling it because it was crap they stopped selling it as the manufacturer stopped making it.......

I have used Buddy Clean for the last 7 years and it has been fine for me.

I do have a bottle of the new stuff that AP are selling and will switch to that once I have used up all the Buddy Clean I have left.

I just use warm water. Lots. Possibly an advantage of otscl as they are easy to soak and clean. Only for three years, and it is probably a factor that this is a temprate climate here. If I was in the tropics I expect I would be more concerned about bugs.

I've tries multiple cleaning methods. Virkon, listerine, dish soap(not recommended it takes forever to rinse out), detol and hot water.

The best results I have had was with virkon. Now if i had a set of lungs sit around and give off a nasty funk, i would be tempted to use a diluted solution of bleach to kill off the fungus/smell/bacteria then give the lungs a good rinse . What I typically do after a clean is rinse the lungs with listerine to give them a nice minty smell when I use them. Ymmv.

Something I didn't like about the Inspo as JJ mouthpiece and hoses was that they were semi permanently connected, so almost impossible to dry out that last little bit of the hose by the mushroom valves. When Intook them off to fit a shrimp, with the qd hose ends they were still wet, and if not washed quickly as well, I imagine pretty nasty too.

Be very careful using bleach. I have a friend that suffered permanent visual damage due to bleach residue in his bailout tanks. Nasty stuff that bleach!

@steve

How can you tell it gives the best results , can you test your kit four bacteria's?
I can't i can only see if the surface is clean but nothing more than that

I'm not Steve,
But somewhere there is a published study where Virkon was way ahead of everything else that was tested for killing bacteria. It's important to use the correct concentration and rinse out well afterwards. But in my experience, anything that will kill the bacteria needs thoroughly rinsing out afterwards or you get a nasty taste in the loop that I wouldn't recommend breathing for any length of time.

I just ran out of Buddy Clean and new stuff is waiting. I liked Buddy Clean, because it was easy to use and smell and "taste" was okay.
New one smells bad, but I hope it's as effective as label says.
I haven't decide how to use new kind of bottle. I'll propably move liquid to old spraybottle.

And it is food safe as well so less worries if ingested.

I've had a couple of bad experiences with virkon residue but it's still the disinfectant I use. Rinse the shit out of it afterwards. If I recall it's the only broad disinfectant that DEFRA approved.

The sales rep told me the only difference between Virkon S and the much cheaper pet/household version is the addition of a fragrance (and lack of paperchase over its effectiveness). How hard the fragrance is to rinse away I dont know. I just buy a sachet every couple of months, only costs a couple of quid.

I have only ever used Virkon S in tablet form. Pop one tablet in a spray bottle
and add 500mil of water and let it dissolve. Spray the hoses lungs etc and let
it soak for 10 min then rinse well and soak in fresh water, job done.

For those interested: Buddy Clean was the APD trading name for the product TriGene. TriGene was manufacturer by Tristel for MediChem, the supplier. Tristel changed the formula without re-issuing a test certificate and MediChem terminated there agreement with Tristel. Tristel still supply "TriGene" branded as Distel.

MediChem now make there own formula called ChemGene, which APD sell directly (cutting out the decanting and repackaging, I guess).

I've used TriGene for 14 years with no issues.

Matt.
